Unit 3: Interacting with Texts Assignment
Unit 3: Interacting with Texts
Eng. 101, Jack Christian
Genre: Documented Argument Length: 3-4 pages
Audience: The same audience imagined by Carr or Sullivan for their articles
Essay Assignment: How does Facebook or some other New Media platform illustrate, expand, complicate, suggest a way to revise, or even refute the viewpoints of either Nicholas Carr in “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” or Andrew Sullivan in “Why I Blog”?
For this essay you will combine your own analysis of Facebook or other New Media with your careful reading of Carr or Sullivan. Ask yourself What would Carr say about Facebook? What would Sullivan say? What do you say? How do these viewpoints connect and diverge?
It will be important to use direct quotations and examples from Carr or Sullivan, and to analyze them in-depth.
The most successful essays will use manage to spark an interesting conversation between themselves and the writer they are responding to, in conjunction with several well-chosen, complicating examples.
Make sure to include an original title and a Works Cited page (although your only source will likely be either the Carr or the Sullivan article).
